FREEDOM FIELD

Freedom Field, Brooke Army Medical Center | The Style Scribe

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that I attended a special ribbon-cutting  for Freedom Field, a lush field for recreation and rehabilitation for injured military at the Warrior & Family Support Center in San Antonio. Our family gave this field as a gift in memory of my grandaddy, Kerry G. Merritt, who served in the European theatre of World War Two. While serving our country, he was injured and spent time in several military hospitals abroad, so the center and Freedom Field are a perfect way to celebrate his memory. Our family wanted to do something for those who continue to put themselves in harm’s way on our behalf. It was a beautiful ceremony among gorgeous grounds at Brooke Army Medical Center. We are so grateful for the efforts of those who have created and run the center and for those who come to it as a result of their service in protecting our freedom. Thank you to Returning Heroes Home for creating this beautiful facility!

January 1st, 2014. Time to hit the refresh button and start fresh, don’t you agree? There are a lot of things I accomplished in 2013, but I’m planning to take this year’s goals to a whole new level. After having a week to settle in and absorb my newfound freedom, I’m excited to share that I’m now doing The Style Scribe full-time! I absolutely LOVED my job and the people I worked with, but as my blog has grown in the last year, I felt limited in the time I was able to spend on my blog while still remaining a sane individual who also has a social life (I never saw my friends or did anything but the blog on weeknights and weekends). I’m thrilled about the many possibilities, projects and partnerships that will come with this new year and am so grateful for having such engaged and loyal readers! THANK YOU for continuing to follow along through my journey – I am so thankful for your unwavering support. As always, if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions for what you’d like to see more of on the blog, feel free to comment on this post or email me! I love hearing from you. Cheers to an amazing 2014 – excited for what’s next!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Merry Christmas | The Style Scribe

Merry Christmas everyone! There’s something so special about Christmas morning. I’m not sure whether it’s the gifts under the tree, the fire crackling, my entire family in pajamas, or the cinnamon buns in the oven, but today is the day I always feel gratitude and thanks. Even while I love Christmas, this holiday is bittersweet. I feel a sense of loss associated with Christmas because my dad isn’t here to celebrate it. It’s been 7 years since he passed away and I still can’t believe it. I’m grateful to have had such an inspiring and encouraging father – I wouldn’t have the work ethic I do (and pretty much my entire personality) if it weren’t for him. I miss his famous phrases that his friends still recall, “That’s what I’m talking about!”, our inside jokes and his relentless faith and graciousness. I hope that while you celebrate today and rip open the (hopefully many) gifts, remember why this holiday exists and sing your praises to the heavens! Have a safe and happy holiday!
