Portobello Market, London | The Style Scribe

Back in early 2012, I took a two week trip to Sydney and Melbourne with the rewardStyle team – while in Sydney, I tried out a new-to-me breakfast/brunch spot called Bill’s, founded by renowned Australian chef, Bill Granger. All I can say about Bill’s was that it was the most decadent and delicious breakfast of my life and that should an opportunity to eat at another of his restaurants came up again in my life, I would jump at the chance. When I heard that another of his restaurants (Granger & Co) had a location in London (two, in fact), I knew I’d be hitting it up before making the trip back to the US. Granger & Co is nestled in Notting Hill, right down the road from the famed Portobello Market. When I planned my day in Notting Hill, I decided to start the day with breakfast! Just as I had ordered in Sydney, I chose the banana ricotta pancakes with honeycomb butter and maple syrup. An indulgent breakfast to say the least, but it was well worth it. The restaurant also bakes it’s bread and other yummy bakery items in-house, and carries some delicious gluten-free options too. Granger & Co is absolutely a restaurant you can’t miss if you’re in London – there’s always a line out the door, so plan to come at least 30 minutes before you want to eat!

After downing my pancakes I sidled down the quiet street with the cute boutiques I mentioned on Thursday, before coming upon the bustling Portobello Market. By bustling, I really mean jam-packed, almost can’t breathe, too many people sort of situation. It was a little overwhelming for someone who gets anxiety in tightly packed spaces, but a real treat to see all the various vendors and cool products. From vintage boxing sets to luxe fur coats to grand antique mirrors, you’re sure to find an eclectic and unique item to spruce up your home decor or add a little something new to your wardrobe. If you want to avoid the masses, I suggest going before 11am – if you can’t manage getting up that early on a Saturday (sometimes it’s unavoidable), just stay on the sidewalk behind the vendor stations vs walking on the actual street. There are much fewer people and you can view all of the items without feeling claustrophobic. Portobello Market is definitely worth a trip on your next visit to London, just remember these tips if you have crowd anxiety like I do! I probably would have gotten more photos from the market if the crowd hadn’t driven me away into the calmer Notting Hill streets… sorry!
