Before the off-the-shoulder look became a big deal a little over a year ago, I honestly tried not to buy things where I’d need to go braless or wear a strapless bra. As someone who’s a bit top-heavy, I’ve had the hardest time finding a strapless bra that fits, is comfortable, lays flat and stays up. I can’t be the only person who’s struggled with this issue!
First I tried stretchy bandeau bras – these are great for if you only need minimal support and don’t mind going without an underwire. They are very soft and comfortable, but because I’m busty, this did NOT work for me for very long. I then ordered a few online that I thought might fit – I chose the same bra brand I usually wear, Simone Perele, in the same size I get my regular bras. Apparently that’s not how you’re supposed to do it! The strapless version in the same size never fit me!
Before my Miami trip I finally gave up on my online attempts to find a strapless bra, and decided to pop into Nordstrom. Those who know me know I’m not a shy gal when it comes to meeting new people, striking up a conversation, etc, but I AM shy when it comes to getting dressed. I’ve just never been a fan of dressing and changing in front of other people, even family or friends!
Anywho, while perusing my options in Nordstrom’s lingerie section, an associate came up to me to offer help. I told her my predicament and she offered to fit me so we could find the right size. Being the bashful person I am, I was hesitant, but she made me feel at ease and totally comfortable. She had me try on this Wacoal Convertible Strapless Bra and I almost died when I saw the cup size she brought me – I actually said “there’s no way that’s going to fit me”! What I found out was a total surprise – apparently you’re supposed to size up a cup size or two in a strapless bra from your regular bras in order to get that seamless, flattering fit.
I have to admit, the large cup size of my new strapless bra still makes me laugh, but it is the PERFECT fit! It’s now the only strapless bra I wear. If you haven’t already gotten fitted for the correct size, I highly recommend taking a trip to your local Nordstrom store. In the meantime, here are a few other strapless bras worth a peek:
- I’m loving the smooth lines on this bra by Felina – looks like it would look great under even the thinnest fabrics!
- Who knew Betsey Johnson designed intimates? This strapless bra is simple and pretty.
- This bra is just for girls with D-cups and up. The side bands are thicker, helping with support and keeping lines smooth.
- Silicone-free banding and convertible straps make this bra a unique and versatile choice!
- If you want your strapless bra to be well-fitting and still maintain some sex appeal, try this Natori bra with a lace-trimmed band.

I am the same way as you!! I despise wearing a strapless bra and am always trying to hide my chest size. I am going to check out these strapless bras because I am in desperate need of one! :)

The same thing happened to me at Nordstrom, she brought me the bra and I was like– there’s noooo way! But for sure, it was a good fit. Still wearing it! I swear by the Le Mytstere one’s. I can even wear them while nursing! Thanks for this post. Loved it!
seriously though – I was bowled over laughing after I put it on. It looks pretty ridiculous, but it fits perfectly!!
Are strapless bras ever comfy? I am on the large end of the scale (HA!) and one fitter told me to go down a band size in your strapless that way it doesn’t stretch and slide down.I did this for my wedding strapless bra and it is true! However, the girls at Nordstrom did the same thing (Up your cup size) to me when I went in for a regular bra & it has been hands down the BEST bra. No spilling over; everything perky yet still tasteful. Thanks for this post!!
Ya, I need to go back and look, but I’m pretty sure my strapless bra now is a 34 DDD —– dying!!!

I had no idea!! I hate, hate, hate wearing strapless bras and usually take them off after the first hour. Needing to go get sized- I’m fairly certain I’ve been wearing the wrong size!

About six months ago I was shopping in a mall with a Nordstrom far from my home(and the first one in my state! oh wisconsin), and on a whim decided to try there for the new bras I was needing. I had a similar experience in being shocked at what my actual size was, and how amazing my boobs could look! I’ve recommended it to so many friends since.
I love this post! I am a manager for a Nordstrom lingerie department in Oregon and that strapless is one of our best sellers! Also so true about going up a cup, and no matter the size people are always shocked lol
I’m so glad you wrote this! It’s definitely been an issue for me with all the off-the-shoulder stuff these days. I despise strapless bras. ;)
