I can talk about Texas heat until I’m blue in the face, but if you live here you know that already. At the end of summer, we want fall to arrive so desperately we may pull out our cold weather wardrobe too soon. It’s important to have a few key transitional basics in your closet, especially on the more sophisticated side – that way you have items you can wear to work or out on the town. Unless you work somewhere that requires a suit, here are five office appropriate items that transition from season to season with ease:

  1. A neutral suede skirt – I picked up this piece a few weeks back! Right now I’m wearing it with crisp white button-downs for meetings and sleeveless tops on the weekend. Once it cools down, I can’t wait to style it with pretty sweaters like this little one-shoulder number! PS: I’m pretty tall (5’9), so this skirt is shorter on me than it would be if you’re on the shorter side. PPS: I normally wear a 6 in Vince, but got the skirt in an 8 so the box pleat doesn’t pull in the front – blame it on my hips!
  2. A clean white button-down – in addition to being effortlessly polished, it’s a timeless look that works for any occasion. It’s also incredibly easy to layer and style with a bunch of different things! A clean white button-down is a piece everyone should own. The one I’m wearing here is little more editorial than one I’d recommend for work, but there are so many great styles out there! This one by J.Crew is classic and under $70. If you’re looking for something of the silk variety, you can’t go wrong with Equipment. For a high-end basic you’ll have forever, try this Theory shirt.
  3. A lightweight pair of black pants – of all the tailored trousers I’ve tried, this style from J.Crew is my favorite! Try the crop flare trend with this pair of pants (under $80) and a pointy-toe pump! For something a little fancier, this Veronica Beard pair is adorable! Love the button detail.
  4. A structured blazer – it may still be hot outside, but buildings are generally very cold to deal with the influx of body heat in the office space. When working full-time, I always used to bring a jacket or sweater with me so my teeth wouldn’t be chattering all day. This Rag & Bone blazer is polished and professional for work, but would look chic as hell with a plain white tee and jeans on the weekend!
  5. A sleek pair of pumps in black or nude – the shoe style I have the most versions of in my closet is definitely the classic pointy-toe pump. They look amazing with skirts and pants alike, and will never go out of style. Since you will likely be wearing these a lot, I would recommend investing in a nice pair. I have pumps in regular leather, patent and suede and the ones that have lasted the longest are the patent version. I also prefer the pointy-toe style to a round toe. For a slightly lower heel and price point, I would highly recommend Kate Spade’s Licorice Pump. I have it in three different colors! If you’re open to spending a bit more, I’d suggest this Prada pump (have it and love it, but runs small) and the Manolo Blahnik BB pump.
