Please forgive my naked sconces! Clearly my bathroom is not yet finished, but I did have my window treatments installed a couple weeks back and I should be getting my bath linens from Matouk any day now. Things are definitely coming together! One thing I absolutely love about the addition on my house is that each room has so much natural light. This was something I knew I wanted and it was the first thing I told the architect when we were brainstorming. If it’s a sunny day, I do not have to turn a single light on until the sun goes down – it’s perfect! It’s especially nice in my bathroom where I put on my makeup. Having good lighting can make or break your makeup look, don’t you think?
If you’ve caught my everyday makeup routine over on YouTube, you’ll know I keep my makeup pretty soft and neutral throughout the day. It’s not super exciting, but it’s a nice look for the work and everyday life. At night however, I like to add some drama with a subtle smokey eye. To achieve my look here you can either watch this recent video tutorial using the same eyeshadow palette in a different color (Scandalust) or follow the instructions below!
- Start out with my everyday makeup routine until you get past the base eyeshadow application.
- Once you’ve applied a neutral base eyeshadow, grab a stiff and round defining brush and lightly tap on a medium taupe, brown or grey eyeshadow – I’m using the color from Marc Jacobs Eye-Conic Palette in Edgitorial. I’d recommend blowing on the brush before putting it to your eye, so you can apply it evenly without powder ending up on your cheeks. Place the tip of the brush right on the outer edge of your crease on your upper eyelid and start to softly spread it around. I always keep the color darker at the crease and then fan out around it so the outer edges are softer.
- Grab a thin liner brush and dab it in the same color you used on your creases, dusting on the outer edges of your lower lash line. At this point, you can grab the brush you used to apply your base shadow to soften up and blend the darker colors on your crease and lower lash line (if necessary).
- Apply a thin line of liquid eyeliner (this is my fave! so easy to apply) in a complimentary color, right along your lash line. I prefer to keep it on the outer edges vs doing the whole lash line.
- At this point, apply your bronzer and blush. If you’re looking for a subtle (but effective) bronzer, I’ve been using Hoola forever!
- To finalize the eye look, grab your favorite mascara (mine is CoverGirl Clump Crusher!), and put on a couple layers.
- Unless you’ve got a flair for the dramatic, choose a more neutral lip so you let your eyes do the talking. Here I’ve used Burberry’s Liquid Lip Velvet in Fawn, topped with Laura Geller Color Lustre in Sugar Cane.
