We spent probably 90% of our first full day in Porto on our feet! While we were completely tuckered out by the end of the day, it was SO worth it. We saw so much! While we did have about half a day before and half a day the next day to explore, this was really our only sunrise to sunset day in Porto. We wanted to fit as much in as possible! I’ll be sharing our full itinerary via A Detailed Destination next month, but here’s a peek at things we did that day…
We both wanted to snap photos of some of the most notable churches (igrejas!) in the area, as they feature massive walls filled with gorgeous blue and white tiles on the exterior. On this day we visited Igreja de Santo Ildefonso, Capela das Almas, Igreja do Carmo and Igreja dos Carmelitas, and we visited two others on the other days of our trip. We also walked across the Dom Luis bridge for to capture images of the Douro river and Ribeira district from above – I should note that both of us are afraid of heights and this was not done without difficulty!! While on the other side of the river, we stopped at Sandeman for a port wine tasting – while touristy, it was fun to hear about the history of the wine and production… plus it ended with a tasting of three great varietals! We grabbed happy hour at a chapel-turned-wine-bar called Capela Incomum (s’cute!) and then dined later at DOP. The food, aesthetics and service at DOP were above and beyond! So delicious, and pretty reasonably priced considering how outstanding it was.
Before ending this post, I have to mention my dress. I’m sure you’re thinking, dear Lord, not another off-the-shoulder dress! But I wouldn’t talk about it if it weren’t simply the best. I wore this dress from dawn until dusk and it was the MOST comfortable item I wore the entire trip! The fabric is super soft, and it also doesn’t hurt that it’s got a smocked, stretchy waistline. Perfect for a big day of eating and drinking, if you ask me! I quickly got it dry cleaned while home last week so I could pack it for California too… I love it so much! Did I mention it’s under $150? Such a great day-to-night option whether you’re traveling or hanging out at home this summer.
