If you’ve spent any time on Pinterest, you’ve likely seen photos of this brilliantly colored palace before. Palacio National da Pena is situated atop Portugal’s Sintra Mountains, just a 30 minute drive away from Lisbon. When we first started planning our day trip here, the close proximity to Lisbon made us think we could do it all on our own via train and cab… but thanks to a tip from one of Meghan’s friends who had recently visited Sintra, we decided to hire a local tour guide company to take us around. Thank goodness we did, because OH MY GOSH. We would have been in trouble had we tried to do it on our own!

The company we used is called WonderVan and we highly recommend it! Our guide Diogo lives in Sintra himself and told us so much about the history of the area. He also took us to a couple of places we never would have known about if we’d gone on our own (more on that later)! Another reason to work with WonderVan? Diogo knew the fastest way to get us in each place (getting tickets at the bottom exit vs the top entrance), he gave us detailed instructions (literally drew things on a map) on what was worth seeing inside each spot, and took us to a couple of his favorite local spots in town to grab food and snacks. He also helped us weather-wise, taking us a different route than originally planned so we could see Pena Palace when the weather was most clear that day. If you’re planning a day trip to Sintra from Lisbon, definitely book WonderVan… you won’t regret it! I’ll definitely be sharing more about our day trip to Sintra in my upcoming Portugal Itinerary for A Detailed Destination! Stay tuned for more content from our trip this week…

PS – how cute is this linen dress and these sandals?! Tory Burch is killing it right now. Such gorgeous summer staples. I think the sandals will look great going into fall too in the Texas heat.
