Skincare Tips for Tired, Travel-Worn Skin | Merritt Beck of The Style Scribe

If you’ve been reading my blog at all this summer, you’ve probably figured out I haven’t been home very much. I’ve been traveling up a storm all summer long! While all of this travel has been so much fun and created some great content opportunities for my blog, it hasn’t been so wonderful to my skin. My skin is already very dry and sensitive, so all of this flying and changes in altitude, air pressure and weather in each new location has made my skin a little temperamental.

I can’t say I’ve always been the best about taking all of my go-to skincare products with me on each trip, but I am getting better about it. I usually try to keep my toiletry bag as light as possible so I can save space and weight for extra workout clothes and other necessities I like to take with me. With that said, I’ve definitely been taking a few of my tried and true favorites along for the ride so my skin can get the TLC it needs while I’m on the road.

While I switch new products in and out of my routine every so often, Colleen Rothschild products have always been a steady feature. The Age Renewal Super Serum has been a pretty consistent part of my nighttime skincare routine over the last few years, especially lately as I attempt to battle fine lines and wrinkles (thanks, 30’s!). I also use the Clarifying Detox Mask when I need a powerful (but gentle!) reboot post-travel. This creamy charcoal mask is a nice way to wipe the slate clean and extract toxins my skin picks up from the plane, pollution and other places on my travels and the way home.

The latest of her products to find its way into my routine is the Intense Hydrating Mask. This is one product I have been packing on my recent trips to combat dryness from the plane and rehydrate my tired skin for a more youthful glow the next morning. The night I arrive somewhere new, I apply this mask as the very last step in my skincare routine and actually leave it on all night. This lets to super hydrating formula really soak in and absorb into my dehydrated pores, so I wake up the next morning looking refreshed and dewy. If you travel a lot or just have really dry skin like I do, I highly recommend this product!

The other product that is new to my routine is this eye serum. Again, I haven’t been the best about giving the skin around my eyes the proper care they need, but I’m trying to change that… especially as I get older. This area is so delicate and needs to be supported by products that not only protect the skin, but also keep it looking soft and youthful. I’m hoping this serum will help counteract the crow’s feet I’m starting to notice and keep the area around my eyes hydrated and firm! My eyes always look so tired when I travel too, so I’m also hoping this serum will help lessen that puffy look.

If you travel often like I do, below are some tips for keeping your skin looking refreshed and feeling fabulous:

  • Drink water – according to the Aerospace Medical Association, you should be drinking eight ounces of water for every hour you’re in the air, but they also say the longer the flight the more you should be drinking. I try to take at least one large bottle of water with me on a flight, and the second I arrive to my hotel or AirBnB, I stop by a convenience store to stock up on bottles for my stay. While moisturizers and masks will certainly help, you’ve got to be sure to hydrate from the inside out!
  • Eat clean – choose water-dense foods like fresh greens, veggies and fruit as opposed to foods that’ll make you break out (like bread, cheese, chocolate). Obviously treat yourself when you want, but eating clean will keep your skin in tip top shape!
  • Put your moisturizer or mask in the fridge – in addition to being a nice summer treat, the cooling effect reduces puffy eyes and calms inflammation in your skin!
  • Lighten up on makeup – unless I’m shooting outfits for the blog, I usually try to do the bare minimum as far as face makeup goes. I almost always wear concealer to hide my dark circles, but generally forego foundation if I’m traveling alone or don’t have plans to take photos of myself. Give your skin a break when you can!
  • Don’t touch your face – I have struggled with this habit for YEARS! I always rest my face on my hand when sitting at a desk getting work done, but touching your face is literally the worst for your skin. Your hands pick up so much bacteria as you explore and touch door handles, public transportation, etc. Wash your hands often and resist the urge to touch your face!
