There’s something very “New York” about an all black outfit, wouldn’t you agree? That’s at least what I was thinking when I put together this ensemble for my trip to the Big Apple earlier this month. I really wanted to buy a pretty pleated skirt for the holiday season, but wanted a style that was basic enough to be worn a variety of ways and something I could wear beyond Christmas and New Year’s. While shopping for my trip, I found this knit pleated skirt at Nordstrom. Since it’s black it can be worn with so many things, but the hint of sparkle dresses it up enough for a night out! It’s the ideal weight for winter and is super flattering too. PRO TIP: when buying a midi skirt or dress, you never want the hem to hit you at the widest part of your calf. This hits me right below my calf, giving it a leg-elongating (and slimming) effect! PS: I found it ran a little large (I’m wearing a small here).

I paired this pretty skirt with another new piece, this A.L.C. turtleneck. At first glance it seems like a super simple staple, but give the shoulders a closer look. That’s right, there are shoulder pads! This top is both modern and kinda 80’s, which I’m really loving. Not to mention it’s super soft and comfortable! It adds a little edge to the look, don’t you think? To add yet another flattering touch, I tied the look together with this knotted belt by Isabel Marant. The exact belt I’m wearing is sold out in black, but it comes in this similar style in black and the exact style I’m wearing is also available in cognac! It’s such a chic accessory that has been very useful in my wardrobe since I bought it last year.

Finally, I topped my outfit off with this Club Monaco coat. You probably can’t tell from that one photo, but the coat has silver metallic threading woven in. It’s such an elevated nighttime style for wearing to parties, dinners, etc! The sparkle is very subtle though, which I appreciate. Shop my entire look in the SHOP THE POST section below, and stay tuned for more outfits from my New York trip!
