Since we’re still fresh off of our New Year’s celebrations (yesterday morning was spent in recovery on the couch!), I thought it might be fun to share some of my resolutions and personal goals for 2019. When setting these goals for myself, I like to come up with ideas that 1) do good, 2) enrich my life, and 3) are actually possible and attainable.

IMPROVE MY PIANO SKILLS

I’ve been wanting to get back into singing and playing piano for awhile now, and with my recent acquisition of a piano I finally can! I’ve only had it for a couple of weeks, but I’ve spent nearly an hour almost every day on it. I never received formal piano lessons, but actually taught myself when learning to read music for choir in high school. What I’d really like to do is take some lessons to improve my technique, because I never learned the right way to use my hands! Scales, transitions, etc all give me grief because I’ve never had lessons on the right maneuvers and hand placements. I’m hoping that by the end of the year, I can play a good selection of songs all the way through without pauses or errors!

TRAVEL TO TWO PLACES I’VE NEVER VISITED BEFORE

Each year I like to plan trips to two new-to-me destinations. I love exploring new places, testing out the local cuisine, learning about different cultures and their history, and of course it makes great content for my blog too! This year, I’m looking closely at the south of France and Greece… and I’d also love to do Nantucket this summer!

READ A MINIMUM OF TWO BOOKS A MONTH

To many of you this probably doesn’t seem like many books, but like I said above, I want to set resolutions I know I’ll able to stick to! I love to read, but after staring at a computer all day working reading is really the last thing I want to do at night or in my spare time. Thankfully, audiobooks exist! I love that I can listen to them on my walks and runs, as I’m getting ready for the day, when I’m cooking, etc. In addition to being solid entertainment, I’m always learning new things, expanding my vocabulary and broadening my mind! Actually reading a book is definitely faster than listening to one, as you are at the mercy of whoever is narrating it! Most of the books I’ve listened to in the last year have been anywhere from 6 hours to 12 hours in length! That’s a lot of listening, but I’m definitely up for the challenge! I just downloaded a bunch of books to my Audible app to get started, and I chose a wide variety of genres to keep things interesting. Click here for a list of ones books I’ve read recently!

NOT SPEND SO MUCH TIME ON MY PHONE

Sure, my job requires me to post to Instagram and share things on an ongoing basis… so I’m going to be on my phone a lot. BUT I feel like I spend so much unnecessary time scrolling through feeds during the day (Instagram, Twitter, News), instead of actually DOING things. The latest iPhone update gave me a wakeup call last week when it started alerting me the average amount of time I spend on my phone every day. NOT COOL. Instead, I’d like to use that time to do other things that will actually enrich my life… like play piano, read/listen to a book (technically on my phone, but not looking at it!), get outside, volunteer. I even bought some adult coloring books to do when I want to be creative but not look at my phone or computer! Honestly, I’d be happy if I could even just cut my phone time down by a quarter. Any lower number would be an improvement!!!

STAY FIT AND FIGURE OUT PORTION CONTROL

I’m not starting any new diets or changing up my routine for the new year, but I really just want to keep up the work I’ve been doing! I’m still loving BBG and recently started Orange Theory (more on that during Wellness Week next week!), and just want to keep making progress. I do however need to get a grip on portion control. I’m generally a healthy eater – I cook very clean and healthy meals during the week and allow myself to indulge on weekends and when traveling… but I really struggle with portion control. At all times. As someone who is such a control freak about other things in her life, you’d think I’d have figured this out by now! Whether it’s a giant salad or a giant bowl of pasta, I want volume. I’ve never been able to just “have a bite” of something indulgent and then stop eating it or order a burger and just eat half. I would really like to learn the art of that though! Some of the fittest people I know eat all kinds of food (dairy, carbs and sugar included!), but just keep their portions smaller and don’t overeat. Please send me recommendations if you are successful at this!!

What are your resolutions for the new year?!
