HEALTHY HABITS START AT HOME // THE STYLE SCRIBE

The title of this post really is so true, isn’t it? Whether we’re talking about making healthy choices when it comes to the food you eat, establishing a morning routine that sets you up for a productive day, or reducing screen time before bed to improve your sleep, so much of what goes into a healthy lifestyle starts in your own house. All things considered, I’m a fairly healthy person and have a routine at home that keeps me that way. I make time to exercise daily, eat a lot of nutritious, whole foods, and get about eight or nine hours of sleep each night. But I, like everyone else, have my own vices. I’ve got a major sweet tooth and little self control when it comes to desserts, I can get sucked into doom scrolling on Instagram, and tend to reach for snacks right before bed.

In addition to doing Dry January and getting my steps in every day, I really want to work on the aforementioned unhealthy habits at home. I’d like to reduce my screen time and create more than I consume. I’m definitely addicted to checking Instagram and the feed every few hours, and often just sit there scrolling while I’m watching TV. It’s an annoying habit, actually, because I’ll end up missing key moments of a show or movie and have to rewind. It’s also bad for my neck – I have a lot of neck and back issues from looking down at my phone for long stretches of time! I’m also trying to replace my nightly sugar cravings with fresh fruit instead of with cookies, candy or other unhealthy sweets. I’m not doing Whole30 this month, but when I did it back in 2017 it taught me I can, in fact, survive without sweets and I’d love to get back to a place where I’m not reaching for it every night.

One thing I was so excited to start my year with is my new breakfast table and chairs. I ordered them months ago and they finally arrived over the holidays! I love being able to sit and have my breakfast there – my morning routine feels much more complete now that I have somewhere other than my living room swivel chairs to sit and enjoy my tea and fruit in the morning. The morning light shines in so beautifully and it really is such a cherished moment of my day now! Having a dedicated spot to start my day helps to get it off on the right foot.

What healthy habits are you working into your everyday routines? I’ll be talking more about food, fitness and general health on the podcast this week, so stay tuned for the new episode on Wednesday!
