A DAY IN THE LIFE

A DAY IN THE LIFE // MERRITT BECK, THE STYLE SCRIBE

I recently received a request for a “day in the life” post, which I don’t think I’ve ever actually done! I talked a bit about my everyday routine in a work-related blog post back in 2019, but a lot has changed since then. I now have a dog, a full-time employee, and a podcast! I figured it was a great time for a refresher. Let’s jump into it!

Depending on what I have going on that day, I typically wake up between 6 or 6:30am. The first thing I do is throw on workout clothes, put in my contacts and brush my teeth, before taking my dog Reeses outside to potty. After that I get my breakfast started! Lately I’ve been frying an egg or two and pairing the eggs with a side of fruit like blackberries, blueberries, strawberries or a grapefruit. I’ll eat my breakfast and enjoy a cup of chai tea, and leave for a walk with Reeses around 7:15am. We usually walk for about 45 minutes to an hour, and in that time we’ll hit 2-3 miles. Once we’re back from the walk, I’ll go upstairs to my home gym and do a workout! I try to work out for 30 minutes to an hour 5-6 days a week, usually jumping between the Peloton and Sculpt Society apps. After I’m done with my workout, I’ll shower and get ready for the day.

My assistant, Liza, arrives at my house at 10am every morning, which is why I structure my morning the way I do! I like to have at least showered by the time she arrives at my house. From 10am until Liza leaves at 6pm, I’m juggling computer work (creating collages, writing blog posts, emailing, creating newsletters), shooting photos or videos for my blog or Instagram, or prepping, recording and editing content for the podcast. Every day is different, but it’s usually a mix of all three of those! Since I recently adjusted my podcast schedule, I’m now doing the recording and the editing on two different days, which has been really nice! I’ve never been much of a to-do list person, so I keep myself organized with the help of my iCal and multiple documents in Google Sheets and Google Docs. I have content calendars for my podcast and for my blog, I have an accounting spreadsheet where I keep track of influencer collaborations and podcast advertisers, and I have several Google Docs where I plan out my podcast episodes and brainstorm content for all of my various channels.

It’s easy for me to get in the zone when I’m working at my computer for long stretches, so I typically just eat my lunch at my desk. I often have podcasts on in the background for us to listen to, but only if we’re not working on things that require us to read or write – for example, I’ll have them on when we’re creating collages, I’m editing photos or videos, etc. I have a hard time focusing when I’m reading or writing and there’s something playing or someone talking at the same time! I will say, having specific office hours has made me far more productive. If I interrupt my work with a lunch out or an appointment of some kind, it’s a challenge for me to get refocused again!

When Liza leaves at 6, I’ll either take Reeses for another walk or start working on dinner. By 7pm I’m usually in my swivel chair in the living room watching TV! After some TV, I’ll clean up around the kitchen and start getting ready for bed. My skincare routine is very simply, so it doesn’t take me very long! Because I get up early each morning, I’m typically in bed by 8:30 or 9 and am asleep by 9:30 or 10. That’s just what works for me!

Now that I’ve read through this, I’m convinced my life is fairly boring and probably not the elaborate, glamorous “day in the life” you were hoping for… but I hope you still enjoyed reading it!
